Online Resources for Research

To begin, perform a basic Google search. Chances are good that a few websites will be able to provide you with useful information. Try using Google’s Advanced Search feature to refine your search. This interface allows you to include and exclude certain terms from your searches.

Google has other search engines that are helpful with research. Google Book Search allows you to browse the contents of a book, and, in some cases, view the book in its entirety. Use the Advanced feature of Google Book Search to refine your search. Try limiting your search to results with previews and/or full views to read the text of the books.

Google Scholar is a search through academic scholarly articles. Use the Advance feature to limit your search to results within subject areas (e.g., Social Sciences, Arts, and Humanities).

Google News searches selected news wire services and newspapers, and the Archive Search feature allows you to explore historical archives.

Many newspapers and magazines have online editions, and several have archives dating back several years. Consider searching sites such as the New York Times and the New Yorker to find articles relating to your subject.

Try searching for books on the Broward County Public Library website. The public library will transfer books to the branch of your choosing so that you can check them out, and several books are always available in the reference department of certain branches for you to review at that particular library (the Location code for books available to check out is CIRC; books that cannot leave the library have a REF code).
