George Clooney is addressing the United Nations about the government of Sudan's draconian campaign of genocide that has left at least 400,000 dead, 2.5 million displaced, and 3.5 million dependent on international humanitarian aid. The strife in the Darfur region of Sudan began in 2003, when African rebels mobilized in protest of the central government's neglect of the populace. The government responded by fomenting civil unrest through the deployment of Arab militias that have systematically slaughtered the citizens of Darfur. George began his crusade for peace in early 2006, filming interviews with refugees to raise public awareness of their plight.
