Jeff Tweedy and crew return with a languid, double-guitar epic
"Impossible Germany," one of the first leaks from Wilco's forthcoming Sky Blue Sky, is a mellow, shambling thing with no snazzy sound effects or other frills - until you get to the guitar solos. The song's first three or so minutes are devoted to a ballad-y tune that's lovely but not memorable. Then lead man Jeff Tweedy and jazz-schooled ax musician Nels Cline embark on a measured but epic jam: Splitting the difference between the lighter side of Television and the lighter side of Sonic Youth, they drop overlapping lines that work up pastoral beauty and build toward a sweet climax. The whole thing has a soft, Seventies-inspired sound that Wilco do as well as anyone - it's as if the Wilco of their first album, A.M., returned from a psychedelic trip into the desert back to their guitars.
